How we work

Disciplined from the first question to the final report.

A credible investigation depends as much on its design and controls as it does on the information collected. Three gates are cleared before any collection begins.

01

Confidential enquiry

We seek to understand the matter sufficiently to assess urgency, fit and immediate risk — without inviting unnecessary sensitive information. Where danger, evidence loss or a legal deadline is present, we say so immediately and advise who else should be engaged.

Output Intake record, priority classification and next-step instruction.

Gate Blackthorn has not yet accepted the matter.

02

Conflict, identity and suitability screening

We verify the instructing client or organisation, identify the parties for conflict checking, and screen for malicious, retaliatory, coercive or unlawful intent. We also consider whether the subject is represented, protected or otherwise sensitive.

Output Conflict result, client verification record and an accept, clarify, refer or decline decision.

Gate No operational work begins until suitability is confirmed.

03

Authority, legality and privacy assessment

We record the client’s relationship to the matter and its legitimate purpose, then assess privacy and personal-information implications, special or children’s information, employment and surveillance issues, and cross-border considerations.

Output Authority and lawful-purpose record, method restrictions, privacy requirements and legal escalation items.

Gate If the work cannot be done lawfully and ethically, we decline it or redesign it.

04

Mandate and investigation design

A concern becomes a clear, testable and commercially controlled assignment. Allegations are converted into specific issues, scope and exclusions are defined, and deliverables, evidential standard, budget, milestones and change control are agreed.

Output Engagement letter, investigation plan, issue matrix, budget and timeline assumptions.

Gate The client approves the mandate before collection begins.

05

Evidence intake and preservation

Client-held material is received through approved secure transfer, recorded by source and date, and preserved in original form where relevant. Duplicates, missing records and potential alteration are identified early.

Output Evidence register, initial chronology, preservation risks and information gaps.

06

Intelligence collection and field investigation

Only approved methods are used: documentary review, corporate and public-record research, open-source intelligence, address and scene verification, subject location, interviews, network analysis, asset-indicator research and — where lawful and proportionate — surveillance.

Output Collection log, source records, field and interview material, progress updates and emerging-risk alerts.

07

Verification, corroboration and analysis

We resolve identity and attribution, compare independent sources, and test documents, statements, observations and digital material against one another. Contradictions and alternative explanations are actively sought rather than avoided.

Output Verified fact set, discrepancy matrix, confidence assessment and updated issue findings.

08

Quality, legal and sensitivity review

Names, dates, amounts, entities and sources are checked, and conclusions are tested against the evidence that supports them. Privilege, privacy, redaction and distribution instructions are applied before release.

Output Quality-approved report, restricted annexures where applicable and a defined distribution list.

09

Reporting and decision briefing

Findings are delivered securely and briefed to authorised decision-makers, with confidence levels, limitations and alternative explanations explained. Investigation recommendations remain separate from legal, HR, claims and governance decisions.

Output Final report or intelligence brief, executive briefing and action log.

10

Closure, retention and follow-up

The matter is closed securely and only what must lawfully or contractually be retained is kept. Evidence is returned or transferred, temporary access is revoked and recurring risk indicators are captured.

Output Closure record, retention schedule and a follow-up proposal where justified.

Reporting standard

What is known stays separate from what is assessed.

Every report distinguishes these categories explicitly. A finding is only as strong as the class of information behind it.

  • Verified factSupported by reliable evidence and appropriate corroboration
  • Documentary recordInformation appearing in an identified record, with authenticity and context stated
  • Direct observationWhat an authorised investigator personally observed and recorded
  • Source informationInformation provided by a person, with reliability and corroboration addressed
  • Analytical assessmentA reasoned interpretation based on stated facts and assumptions
  • InferenceA plausible conclusion that is not directly proved
  • AllegationA claim that is not established merely because it was reported
  • DiscrepancyA material conflict between accounts, records or observed facts
  • Information gapRelevant information that could not be obtained or verified
  • Out of scopeInformation not investigated under the approved mandate

Finding scale

Where an allegation is assessed, the result is stated plainly.

The agreed standard of assessment is stated in the report. This classification is not a criminal verdict or a legal conclusion.

  • SupportedSufficient reliable information supports the material elements of the allegation.
  • Partially supportedSome material elements are supported; others are not established or are contradicted.
  • UnsupportedAvailable reliable information does not support the allegation or materially contradicts it.
  • InconclusiveAvailable information is insufficient, unreliable or materially conflicting.

Limits

What no investigator can promise.
